This lesson covers the first part of the specification on alkanes. This is includes:

  • Nomenclature
  • Chlorination of alkanes – free radical substitution
  • Cycloalkanes

Please make your way carefully through the videos. If you think you are happy in your knowledge of these topics, you can of course jump to the next lesson. Alternatively, you could try the test to make sure.

Video 1 – this is a fairly long video covering nomenclature or naming of alkanes, with some practice examples at the end

Video 2 – covers the first reaction mechanism in organic chemistry, which is free radical substitution.

Video 3 – a short video on cycloalkanes. They are relevant, but not specifically mentioned in the specification.
